Guides
Photo release vs model release
If a person is recognizable and you will publish the picture, you want written permission. Which form depends on whether this is a camp recap or a paid commercial shoot.
Photo release
Use a photo and video release for events, studios, salons, and teams. It should say who is in the frame, who may use the images, and whether that includes ads and social media or internal use only.
Photo release for a minor
A child cannot sign away publicity rights. A parent or guardian signs, and the child's name sits on the same record. Camps and youth sports should collect this at registration, not after the recap is already posted.
Model release
Use a model release when someone is posing for commercial or editorial work, often with compensation. It is the wrong tool for a classroom snapshot. If you are unsure, start with the photo release and ask your attorney whether the usage needs a model release instead.
Questions
Do I need a release for a crowd shot?
If people are not recognizable, many studios skip it. If you will crop to a face for an ad, get a release. When in doubt, collect one at registration.
